Merely Forming A Corporation And
Applying For Tax Exemption Is NOT
What It Means To Start A Church

The questionable sources out there, who say they can help you start a church, focus on selling you a corporation and tax application. That's because they have almost no clue what it really means to start a church.

Their approach doesn't work because...

First, churches do NOT have to incorporate or file IRS tax forms to legitimately pursue their ministries and missions. Churches may function as unincorporated associations if they wish. And, they have automatic federal tax exemption.

Second, the most important aspect of starting a church, besides ministry and outreach, are the tasks that are UNIQUE to Christian Churches. Not the ones that apply generally to all nonprofits. As I see it, the tasks that are unique to churches are Indispensable.

They include, for example, how to:

  • Protect the pastor's leadership role in the church;

  • Address the issue of pastoral succession;

  • Define church membership;

  • Understand and Establish the church's relationship, or “contract,” with its members;

  • Determine and Communicate the standards of church “discipline;”

  • Structure legal and religious authority that will actually hold up in the event of a dispute;

  • Define expectations and relationships within the church to avoid the intervention of secular authorities;

  • Set Up an ordination program and properly ordain ministry personnel;

  • Establish a Pastoral Advisory Council, if desired;

  • Articulate other levels of ministry, such as Elders, Associate Ministers, Deacons, etc.;

  • Prepare and Adopt a church constitution to properly address all these issues;

  • Dedicate church property for certain religious purposes from the beginning;

  • Confirm who may solemnize marriages in a state;

  • Annually Designate the clergy's parsonage or housing allowances;

  • Meet the criteria the IRS uses to determine what a "church" is, solely for purposes of tax law;

  • Satisfy the criteria the IRS uses to determine who a "minister" is, solely for purposes of tax law;

  • Claim all the available exemptions from state tax rolls that are specifically reserved for churches; and

  • Make Sure that ministers take full advantage of all the special tax benefits available to them, such as exclusions from gross income and social security (if desired), and the double mortgage deduction.

From this short list you can see that starting a Christian church is a much more Spiritual and Profound undertaking than others would have you believe.

But, don't expect just anyone to know that, or be able to help you with those tasks. These are not the kind of matters that can simply be researched.

They require a unique set of skills that must be developed at a highly-professional level, over many years of working intimately with Christian leaders to start, advise, and protect churches throughout America.
